Easy AAF brings the user altered auditory feedback (AAF) which can be a useful device for increasing fluency in people with developmental and acquired stammers. It has been developed by two speech and language therapists, both with 10 years experience working with adults with communication and swallowing disorders in the UK.
The user’s voice is played back to them with either a delay (DAF - delayed auditory feedback) or a shift in frequency (FSF – frequency shifted feedback) or a combination of both DAF and FSF. Easy AAF can be used with Apple Headphones with Remote and Mic or a Bluetooth headset making use socially acceptable. Adjusting the settings is easy through the use of sliders.
Easy AAF runs on iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. The delayed feedback can be set between 20 milliseconds and 250 milliseconds. The frequency shifted feedback can be altered +/- 1 octave. Easy AAF also has a record facility that allows the user to listen back to their speech and evaluate how well it is working for them.
AAF works by slowing the rate of speech of the speaker and has been shown in research to result in more fluent speech in a third of people who are dysfluent as a result of Parkinson’s Disease. It can also be effective in developmental stammering.
If you think Easy AAF may be useful for you, we would recommend that you discuss this with your speech pathologist/therapist.
